When to Call 911 - and When Not to Call

We've partnered with the Lynchburg Fire Department to highlight examples of situations where calling 9-1-1 for EMS assistance is appropriate. These are meant as general guidelines - always trust your instincts and use your best judgment in an emergency! 

When to Call 9-1-1 for EMS Assistance 

  1. Severe or traumatic injury
  2. Severe abdominal pain
  3. Difficulty breathing/choking
  4. Chest pain or pressure
  5. Erratic behavior/thoughts of suicide
  6. Loss of or an altered level of consciousness
  7. Seizure
  8. Poisoning or overdose
  9. Diabetic symptoms
  10. Stroke symptoms
  11. Severe allergic reactions

When NOT to call 9-1-1

  1. To get quicker treatment in the emergency department (for non-emergent issues)
  2. Minor illnesses or injuries
  3. Non-emergency situations
  4. General inquiries or advice
  5. Situations that can wait
