$5 million investment will expand behavioral health services, reduce wait times and improve patient experience
Centra is happy to announce a $5 million investment to renovate and expand the Centra Southside Community Hospital Emergency Department (CSCH). This work is actively addressing the evolving emergency care needs of patients and communities in the hospital’s eight-county service area. The project will begin by the end of the year with an estimated completion by next summer, 2026.
“This is an important step that addresses an immediate need,” said Tom Angelo, vice president and hospital CEO. “This expansion will not only provide additional services and space, but it will support our efforts to reduce wait times for patients.”
The expansion plan includes over 2,000 square feet of new and renovated space. When completed, the new emergency department will feature:
-
The current 18 bays will have flex space enabling expansion to 21 bays during peak census.
-
The new and renovated spaces will also be restructured for improved efficiency of care through four bays designed to support patients with behavioral health needs along with six, new fast-track rooms to reduce wait times.
-
New family consultation space is also being added to enhance privacy and comfort for patients and their loved ones.
The emergency department will remain fully operational during the renovation and expansion project.
“It’s important that we evolve and adapt to the needs of our community,” said Kemper Beasley, III, Chair of the CSCH Board of Directors. “This plan addresses multiple community and patient needs, especially for emergency behavioral health services. I want to recognize the support of Centra and the hospital’s emergency department team for their dedication to excellence in patient care and commitment to our mission of improving the health and quality of life for the communities we serve.”
