Centra Southside Community Hospital (CSCH) officially broke ground today on a $5 million renovation and expansion of its Emergency Department (ED), marking a major investment in the future of healthcare for Farmville and the surrounding eight-county region.

The project will increase the existing emergency department structure by more than 2,000 square feet. The current 18 bays will have flex space enabling expansion to 21 bays during peak census. The new and renovated spaces will also be restructured for improved efficiency of care through four bays designed to support patients with behavioral health needs along with six, new fast-track rooms to reduce wait times. New family consultation space is also being added to enhance privacy and comfort for patients and their loved ones.

“This groundbreaking represents our continued commitment to the health and vitality of our community,” said Tom Angelo, vice president and chief executive officer of CSCH. “Every element of this project was designed with patients in mind. From improving access to emergency behavioral health services to decreasing wait times, we are delivering on our mission of improving the health and quality of life of the communities we serve.”

Community leaders and local officials joined Centra leadership and hospital staff to celebrate the milestone.

“This is an exciting day for region” said Kemper Beasley III, chair of the CSCH Board of Directors. “The emergency department is often where patients first encounter our hospital, and this expansion ensures that experience is one of excellence, compassion and efficiency. We are deeply grateful to the Centra Southside Community Hospital Board of Directors, the Centra System Board of Directors and to our dedicated Caregivers who make this progress possible.”

The Emergency Department will remain fully operational throughout construction, ensuring uninterrupted access to emergency care. Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
