“The staff on B tower, second floor couldn’t have been more supportive and thrilled,” Donna Hudson says about her Caregivers’ excitement that she would get to see her grandson get married after all. “I’m grateful for the care in Lynchburg.”
On the day Donna Hudson planned to attend her grandson’s wedding in Lynchburg, she missed the bottom step in the beautiful vacation home her family had rented.
“I came down at 7 in the morning to make myself a cup of coffee,” she shared. “I thought I was on the floor, but I had missed a step.”
The next thing Donna knew, she was flat on her back looking at the ceiling and a change in plans.
“The ambulance came very quickly,” Donna said. Six hours later, she was in surgery at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital for an intertrochanteric hip fracture. Meanwhile, her grandson, Sam, and his fiancée, Laurel, were getting married.
“The Emergency Department handled my case in a very professional manner and made me comfortable while the extent of my injury was determined,” she said. “The orthopedic surgeon was able to work me into the schedule. It was amazing. I had my operation within six hours of my fall.”
Since she was from out of state, a case worker worked with her husband to secure a skilled nursing facility in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona for when she was released and permitted to travel.
Donna is deeply appreciative of the care she received, sharing that “the entire staff, from the surgeon, Dr. Bucker, to the nurses, including Hayley P. and Brittany S., and the case worker, whose name I can’t remember, all helped facilitate my return to Tucson. The Caregivers were all very patient and kind. Although I missed our grandson’s wedding, the care I received helped ease the pain of missing it.”
Fortunately for Donna, that’s not where the story ends. While she was receiving care on the day of her fall, her family came up with a plan and a wonderful surprise.
“Our grandson and his new bride dressed in their wedding clothes and came to my hospital room the next day,” Donna shared. “My husband, who was supposed to officiate the ceremony originally, performed the ceremony again. The staff on B tower, second floor couldn’t have been more supportive and thrilled.”
Neither could Donna.
“It was quite the surprise,” she said. “Lots of tears. And smiles.”
Now she is home, doing well, “grateful for the care in Lynchburg” and glad she could be there for the wedding. Even if “there” happened to be the second floor of Tower B at Lynchburg General.
