Modernizing where we care

Centra’s Modernization Plan is a multi-year initiative that encompasses the most significant facility improvements and capital investments in Centra’s 36-year history. Aligning with our long-term Strategic Plan, this 500-million-dollar investment is multi-faceted and will address different needs found within our community based on findings from our Community Health Needs Assessment, and will come to life with the assistance of our joint ventures, operations, bonds and in partnership with the Centra Foundation and our generous donors.

As a part of this initiative, we are excited to announce the following:

Free-Standing Emergency Room and Urgent Care

Centra is advancing its modernization strategy through a new partnership with Intuitive Health to introduce the region’s first free-standing hybrid emergency room and urgent care facility, expanding access and improving how patients experience care across the system. Located near the U.S. 501 interchange with access from Timberlake Road and Logans Lane, this purpose-built facility will streamline care delivery by evaluating every patient on arrival and directing them to the appropriate level of urgent or emergency care without the need to choose in advance. The model is designed to reduce wait times, ease pressure on Lynchburg General Hospital and ensure timely, high-quality care in a more efficient setting.

This new facility will include;

  • Comprehensive on-site services, including 24/7 laboratory testing and advanced imaging, including X-ray, ultrasound and CT, support faster diagnosis and treatment
  • Patients needing advanced treatment will be transported to Lynchburg General Hospital or another appropriate facility
  • Intuitive Health brings national experience partnering with more than 20 health systems to deliver hybrid ER and urgent care solutions
  • Construction is expected to begin by the end of the year, with an anticipated 12–18 month timeline to opening

Southside Emergency Department expansion

Centra is making a $5 million investment to renovate and expand the Centra Southside Community Hospital Emergency Department (ED). This project directly responds to community concerns around long wait times and access to emergency care, especially across the hospital’s eight-county service area. In addition to physical upgrades, Centra is also prioritizing process improvements to enhance patient flow and overall experience in the ED. The emergency department will remain fully operational during the renovation and expansion project, which is expected to conclude by summer 2026.

Key ED expansion highlights include:

  • Flexible treatment bays that can increase from 18-21 during peak times, including:

    • Five new rooms for behavioral health care

    • Two trauma bays for patients needing higher-level care

    • Spacious fast track rooms to reduce wait times for less critical cases

  • A new family consultation room to support privacy and communication

  • More than 2,000 square feet of new and renovated space

This expansion reflects Centra’s deep commitment to meeting the evolving needs of patients, Caregivers, and the broader community.

Lynchburg General campus parking & wayfinding

The active expansion of lots on Thomson Drive and Tate Springs Road will create 428 additional parking spaces. These new spaces are intended to bring all patient and visitor parking for the Emergency Department and inpatient services to the front of the building enabling ease of access and simplified navigation of our campus.

ParkingPhase One of this work was completed in January 2024 and next phase of this work began in June 2024. The map below provides guidance on the current state of parking and lots that are available for patient and visitor use!

Additionally, modernization of the wayfinding experience inside LGH is currently underway. Please excuse our temporary signage as we make updates to better serve you.

Each tower at Lynchburg General Hospital is designated with a letter. Signs throughout the building will help guide you.

  • Tower B (formerly known as the East Tower)
  • Tower C (formerly known as the South Tower)
  • Tower D (formerly known as the North Tower)
  • The new care tower which is scheduled to be completed in 2028 will be called Tower A.

Updated ED Traffic Pattern

In preparation for the construction of the new emergency department and care tower, there is a new traffic pattern for the Centra Lynchburg General Hospital (LGH) Emergency Department. The existing road for entrance/exit is closed to patient/visitor traffic. A new traffic pattern for entering and exiting the ED parking lot has been established further down Tate Springs Road on the left. There is directional signage for the new entrance and exit. This new traffic pattern will remain in place for much of the construction of the care tower.

There are also free shuttle stops for patients and visitors located across the LGH Campus to help you reach the entrances of the hospital along with parking lots.

Centra Simon's Run Medical Campus

In partnership with Lifepoint Health, Centra plans to open two new facilities to create a new specialty medical campus on Simon’s Run. Construction on both hospitals began in the third quarter of 2024, and the facility is set to open in 2026 to replace inpatient units currently housed at Virginia Baptist Hospital (VBH).

Behavioral Health Hospital

The Centra Behavioral Health Hospital will be an approximately 75,000 square-foot, 72-bed hospital, providing inpatient services for adults struggling with mental health illnesses. This new facility will be structurally designed to create a therapeutic environment for patient healing. The target opening dat is spring 2026.

Rehab Hospital

The Centra Rehabilitation Hospital inpatient facility will be a modern, full-service 50-bed inpatient facility. Designed with a patient-centered focus, this hospital will provide a state-of-the-art environment for care, including therapy gyms and outdoor spaces, as well as a secure unit for brain injury patients, supporting safe, multidisciplinary recovery. The target opening date is summer 2026.

Digital Capabilities

Centra is modernizing its technology by developing a patient-centered digital health ecosystem that includes ambient scribing, security enhancements, digital registration and self-scheduling. These advancements along with construction projects and process improvements are key components of our modernization plan.

Remote Home Monitoring

With the launch of our new Central Command Center, we are enhancing our virtual care and telehealth programs to provide 24/7 access to care and support allowing us to expand care beyond the hospital or clinic setting and meet patients where they are.

Through our remote patient monitoring program, we will be able to:

  • Increase quality of care
  • Manage patient’s health and well-being
  • Help patients avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and trips to the emergency department

Ambient Scribe Technology

Centra’s AI-powered ambient scribe tool is designed to ease documentation for clinicians, giving them more time to focus on patient care. By automating note-taking and streamlining decision-making and coordination, providers can engage with patients without the distraction of computer screens, creating more natural and meaningful interactions. Centra plans to expand the use of the ambient scribe to the Emergency Department in the coming months, followed by implementation for inpatient providers.

Security Enhancements

Centra is implementing important security enhancements to strengthen the safety of patients, visitors and Caregivers across our acute care hospitals. Following a phased approach, a new visitor management system will be introduced at each Centra hospital location. This updated system will allow Centra to verify visitor identities, track who is entering our facilities and ensure that all individuals on campus are appropriately screened.

These steps reflect Centra’s ongoing commitment to providing a safe and secure environment. Upon check-in, each visitor will receive a printed badge with their name, photo and approved destination, which must be worn visibly while inside the hospital.

Digital Registration and Online Scheduling

Centra’s progressive adoption of digital registration and future online self-scheduling reflects a commitment to digital innovation that improves both patient experience and care delivery. The initial launch of digital registration occurred in tandem with the opening of Centra Langhorne Medical Center. As a part of this process patients can complete registration tasks from their phone or computer before arrival, reducing wait times, improving data accuracy and easing administrative burden so care teams can focus more fully on patients.

The planned launch of self-scheduling in 2026 will build on this foundation, giving patients the ability to view availability, book appointments, receive reminders and avoid delays, while practices gain better visibility into capacity and scheduling needs.
